Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has offered a job to a social media user who provided insightful feedback on the food delivery platform’s new ‘Food Rescue’ feature. This feature allows customers to buy cancelled orders at a discounted price, aiming to reduce food waste.
The user, a product manager at a Bengaluru-based startup, suggested several improvements to the feature, including limiting cash on delivery cancellations, restricting the number of cancellations per user, and preventing cancellations once the delivery is within 500 meters of the destination. He also flagged the possibility of users exploiting the feature by deliberately cancelling and re-ordering meals for a discount.
Goyal, impressed by the user’s sharp analysis, acknowledged that many of these suggestions were already implemented and invited the user to discuss potential collaborations. This response sparked a wave of further feedback from other users, including ideas for scheduling orders, prioritizing users who did not cancel orders, and creating a “wall of kindness” or “food bank” to redistribute cancelled orders.
Zomato’s Food Rescue feature is designed to ensure the freshness of the cancelled orders by only showing the offer to customers within a 3km radius of the delivery partner for a short period. The feature is aimed at tackling the issue of food waste, with over 4 lakh perfectly good orders cancelled each month despite Zomato’s strict policies.
