Mon Nov 11 16:34:26 UTC 2024: ## India’s Absence Casts Shadow Over Champions Trophy in Pakistan
**LAHORE, PAKISTAN** – The upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19th, 2025, faces uncertainty as India has confirmed it will not participate, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The BCCI has informed the ICC that the Indian team will not travel to Pakistan due to ongoing political tensions between the two nations. This decision follows a pattern of limited cricketing engagements between the rivals, with the last encounter outside major tournaments occurring in 2013.
While Pakistan is excited to host a major global event for the first time since 1996, the PCB has forwarded the ICC’s email regarding India’s withdrawal to the Pakistani government for further guidance.
The ICC is currently in discussions with Pakistan and the other seven participating nations to finalize a schedule, but a “hybrid” solution, where India plays its matches in a neutral venue like the UAE, has been rejected by the PCB.
Former England assistant coach, Paul Farbrace, who was part of the Sri Lanka team targeted by gunmen in Pakistan in 2009, believes India should reconsider their decision, stating it’s a chance to show commitment to cricketing growth.
“In terms of sport, this is a fantastic opportunity for India to show it wants cricket to flourish, rather than saying ‘no, we don’t fancy going to Pakistan’,” said Farbrace. “Every one of the big nations need to travel to all of the other countries in order to grow the game.”
The absence of India, a major cricketing power, could significantly impact the tournament’s viewership and revenue, as noted by England and Wales Cricket Board CEO, Richard Gould.
With the Champions Trophy just 100 days away, the PCB and ICC face a challenging task to ensure a successful tournament in the face of this major setback.
