Sat Nov 09 20:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Interim Government Bans Awami League Rally, Citing ‘Fascist’ Nature
**Dhaka, November 10, 2024:** The interim government of Bangladesh has banned a rally planned by the Awami League, the party of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, citing its “fascist” nature. The rally was scheduled for Sunday, November 10th, at Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar in Gulistan, a location with historical significance for the party.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, stated that the interim government will not tolerate any violence or attempts to disrupt public order. He accused the Awami League of being “fascist” and warned that anyone participating in the rally will face legal action.
The Awami League had called for the rally to protest what they described as “misrule” and the rise of fundamentalist forces. They also urged supporters to hold smaller rallies across the country.
This is the first rally called by the Awami League since August, when Hasina fled to India amid widespread student protests against her government. The protests, which initially focused on job quota reforms, escalated into a mass movement that ultimately led to the fall of the Hasina government.
While some political factions have called for a ban on the Awami League, the interim government has not made a decision. Some ministers have expressed opposition to a ban, emphasizing political inclusivity. The BNP, the main rival of the Awami League, has also opposed banning any political party.
