Despite the setbacks, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti remained optimistic. “Vinicius made the difference again today,” he said, adding that the Ballon d’Or snub had no impact on the Brazilian’s performance.

Ancelotti also defended Kylian Mbappe, who continues to struggle in front of goal. “He combined well… he didn’t score, but he was always there,” he said. “He will score again, without a doubt.”

The victory sees Real Madrid close the gap on Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table to six points. Barcelona will face Real Sociedad on Sunday.
