Sun Nov 10 14:45:12 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Triumphs Over New Zealand in Thrilling T20 Series Opener

**Dambulla, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka secured a convincing four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first T20 of a two-match series on Saturday, November 9th, 2024.

New Zealand, electing to bat first, struggled to gain momentum and were bundled out for a modest 135 runs in 19.3 overs. Michael Bracewell top-scored with 27 runs, while Will Young contributed 19 runs. Zachary Fox, however, remained unbeaten on 27 runs off just 16 balls. Sri Lankan bowlers were on fire, with Dunith Wellalage taking three wickets, while Hasaranga, Tusara, and Pathirana bagged two wickets each.

A crucial 39-run partnership between Ish Sodhi and Foulkes for the ninth wicket, the highest ever for New Zealand in T20 internationals, helped the Kiwis reach a respectable total.

Sri Lanka’s chase started with a shaky wicket of Kusal Mendis in the second over. Though the innings never truly took off, with the likes of Pathum Nissanka (19), Kusal Perera (23), and Kamindu Mendis (23) failing to build substantial partnerships, a crucial 38-run stand between captain Charith Asalanka (35 not out) and Wanindu Hasaranga (22) turned the tide in Sri Lanka’s favor.

Asalanka was awarded Player of the Match for his crucial knock.

With this win, Sri Lanka takes a commanding 1-0 lead in the series. The second and final T20 match is scheduled to be played on [Date].
