**Chennai, November 9, 2024:** A 23-year-old postgraduate student from Mumbai has filed a complaint with the Valasaravakkam police alleging extortion by a youth she met on social media. The victim, a native of Tirunelveli district, was visiting her aunt in Valasaravakkam when she was noticed by the alleged perpetrator, identified as Sujith.
Sujith subsequently connected with the woman on social media and began engaging in video calls with her. He secretly recorded one of these calls and threatened to post it online unless she paid him ₹5 lakh. The victim, fearing the consequences of the video being released, transferred the money to Sujith. However, he refused to delete the video and demanded further payment.
The woman then reported the incident to the Valasaravakkam police, who have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online interactions and the potential for exploitation through social media.
