Sun Nov 10 05:45:59 UTC 2024: ## India’s Coal Imports Rise Despite Domestic Production Increase
**New Delhi, November 10, 2024:** India’s coal imports rose by 7.8% to 140.60 million tonnes (MT) in the April-September period of the current financial year, according to data compiled by B2B e-commerce company mjunction services ltd. However, the country’s domestic coal production also saw a 6% increase, reaching 453 MT in the same period.
The rise in coal imports can be attributed to factors like the healthy stock position and high volumes being offered through spot e-auctions in the domestic market, according to mjunction MD and CEO Vinaya Varma. Despite this, Varma expects overall coal import demand to remain modest.
While non-coking coal imports saw a slight increase in September, coking coal imports fell due to softening demand and prices in the steel industry. This trend is in line with the recent emphasis from Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy on boosting domestic coal production and reducing imports.
Coal India Ltd, responsible for over 80% of domestic coal output, is focused on ramping up production and supply to meet the country’s energy needs. This shift towards domestic production aims to reduce reliance on imported coal and enhance energy security.
