Sun Nov 10 13:42:24 UTC 2024: ## India Gifts Fast Interceptor Craft to Mozambique, Strengthening Maritime Security Partnership

**Visakhapatnam, November 10, 2024:** India has further bolstered its maritime security partnership with Mozambique by gifting two Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) to the country. The vessels, equipped with water-jet propulsion, were handed over in a ceremony at Nacala, Mozambique, by INS Gharial, the Indian Navy ship that transported them.

The FICs, capable of reaching speeds of 45 knots and carrying a crew of five, are armed with machine guns and feature bullet-resistant cabins. They are expected to play a crucial role in Mozambique’s efforts to combat maritime terrorism and the ongoing insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.

This donation follows previous gifts of two large Interceptor vessels in 2019 and two FICs of the same class in January 2022, showcasing India’s commitment to assisting Mozambique in strengthening its maritime security.

The Indian Navy, increasingly recognized as a key partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), has been collaborating with various nations in the region to equip and train their maritime security forces. These efforts aim to counter threats like piracy, drug and human trafficking, illegal fishing, and maritime terrorism.

Beyond security, the Indian Navy has also demonstrated its commitment to the region through humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts, responding to natural disasters and crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent gifting of these FICs further reinforces India’s dedication to fostering strong partnerships and ensuring security in the IOR.
