**KOCHI, November 10, 2024:** The Syro-Malabar Church has pledged its support to over 600 families facing displacement due to the ongoing Waqf property dispute in Munambam. Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, speaking to the media on Saturday, urged both the Centre and State governments to actively intervene and find a lasting solution.
“This is a humanitarian issue that must be addressed with compassion and in accordance with the Constitution,” the Archbishop stated. He emphasized that the situation would not be resolved quickly, drawing a parallel to the peaceful years-long struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi for India’s independence. He further stressed the need for long-term solutions, having visited families on hunger strike in Munambam seeking justice.
Responding to comments attributed to V. Abdurahiman, Minister for Welfare of Minorities, Sports, Waqf and Haj Pilgrimage, expressing concerns about “anti-government and communal comments” made by church leaders and those supporting the protesting families, Archbishop Thattil asserted his unwavering commitment to the cause. “I will not change my cassock or the principles I stand for based on a Minister’s remarks,” he stated. He stressed that the church would be failing in its duty if it did not stand up for the affected families.
The Archbishop highlighted the deep connection of coastal communities to the sea and emphasized that they should not be displaced. “Democracy must not be used to mistreat people,” he asserted, calling upon the government to ensure unity and peaceful coexistence for all citizens, regardless of religious or political affiliations.
Great to see the Syro-Malabar Church standing up for families facing displacement in Munambam. The Archbishop’s commitment to the cause is truly inspiring. What specific actions is the church taking to support these families, and how can the community get involved to help?
