**Cairns, Australia** – Cassius, the world’s largest crocodile in captivity, has died at the age of 110, Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat announced on Saturday. The 5.48-meter (18 ft) saltwater crocodile, weighing over a ton, had been in declining health since October 15.
“He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild Croc,” the sanctuary stated on Facebook.
Cassius had been a resident at the sanctuary since 1987, transported from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a major tourist attraction. He held the Guinness World Records title since the death of Lolong, a Philippine crocodile, in 2013.
Though his passing is a loss for the sanctuary and the wider community, Marineland Melanesia emphasized that “our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
