Fri Nov 08 22:44:45 UTC 2024: ## Global Deal Reached to Fund Biodiversity Conservation, But Funding Commitments Remain Unclear

**Cali, Colombia** – Delegates at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) have reached a landmark agreement to establish a new fund that will compensate countries for the use of their genetic information. This agreement, reached after two weeks of intense negotiations, will see companies profiting from genetic databases contribute a portion of their profits to global conservation efforts.

The agreement, while significant, falls short of securing broader financial commitments for biodiversity conservation. The fund remains voluntary, with companies “encouraged” rather than mandated to contribute.

The new fund will address the increasing use of digital sequence information (DSI) – genetic data stored in databases – by companies seeking to develop new products in fields like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biotechnology. This agreement recognizes the economic value of biodiversity and aims to ensure that countries where genetic information originates benefit from its use.

“This is a crucial step forward,” said Amber Scholz, from the Leibniz Institute DSMZ. “Conservation is primarily funded by governments and philanthropy. Now, businesses that profit from biodiversity will have a responsibility to contribute.”

The agreement sets guidelines for contributions, suggesting a 1% share of profits or 0.1% of revenue, although these remain non-binding. Governments are “invited” to implement legislation or other measures to make contributions compulsory.

Despite this breakthrough, the lack of concrete funding commitments raises concerns about the fund’s effectiveness. Critics argue that voluntary contributions may not be sufficient to meet the growing needs of global biodiversity conservation.

This agreement marks a significant development in the fight to protect biodiversity, but the path toward securing adequate funding remains unclear. Further negotiations and concrete commitments from governments and businesses are crucial to ensuring the success of this vital initiative.
