**Maputo, Mozambique** – Violence has erupted in Mozambique following disputed presidential election results, leaving at least 30 people dead and dozens injured. The unrest has prompted the deployment of soldiers to assist police in controlling the situation.
Protests against the ruling Frelimo party, which has been in power for nearly half a century, began after the October 9th election, which opposition groups and observers claim was rigged. Demonstrations escalated on Thursday, leading to violent clashes between protesters and security forces in the capital, Maputo.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has documented at least 30 deaths between October 19th and November 6th, with the toll not including Thursday’s violence. Maputo Central Hospital reported that three people were killed and 66 injured during the clashes, with many injuries attributed to gunfire.
The government has defended the police response, claiming it was necessary to restore public order. However, human rights groups have accused the police of using live ammunition against protesters in the past.
Adding to the tension, the government has imposed restrictions on internet access, drawing condemnation from HRW as a violation of human rights. The presidential palace is under heavy guard, and security forces are patrolling the streets, leading many citizens to stay indoors.
The Constitutional Council has yet to validate the election results, which are required for official recognition. The incumbent President Filipe Nyusi is stepping down after serving two terms, handing over to Daniel Chapo, who was declared the winner.
The escalating unrest raises serious concerns about the stability of Mozambique and the legitimacy of the election results. The deployment of soldiers and the escalating violence signal a deepening crisis in the country.
