**WASHINGTON D.C. -** The Justice Department has charged an Iranian asset with plotting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, alleging that he was tasked by the Iranian regime’s elite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to carry out the attack.

The accused, identified as Farhad Shakeri, a 51-year-old Afghan national, allegedly told law enforcement that he was instructed by the IRGC to orchestrate Trump’s assassination but did not intend to carry out the plan within the given timeframe.

Attorney General Merrick B Garland stated that Shakeri was directed to form a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against targets, including President-elect Trump.

FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed that the charges reveal Iran’s continued targeting of US citizens, specifically those who criticize the Iranian regime. He emphasized that the IRGC’s alleged conspiracy with criminals to assassinate Americans on US soil would not be tolerated.

Shakeri, who immigrated to the US as a child, was deported around 2008 after being convicted in a robbery case. Prosecutors believe he is currently in Iran.

In addition to the plot against Trump, Shakeri is accused of hiring two men in New York to kill a US citizen of Iranian origin who publicly opposed the Iranian government. Carlisle Rivera and Jonathan Loadholt, both of whom Shakeri met in prison, have also been charged for their alleged involvement in the murder plot.

These charges come amidst heightened security measures surrounding President-elect Trump. The US Secret Service has deployed robotic dogs to patrol his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, a move aimed at enhancing security following two prior assassination attempts.

Trump survived a bullet wound to the ear during a July rally in Pennsylvania. Three months later, shots were fired near him at his Florida golf club, though he was not injured.

Following his victory in the November 6 election, Trump attributed his survival to divine intervention, declaring that he was destined to “save our country and to restore America to greatness.”
