**Sochi, Russia** – Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory and expressed Russia’s willingness to restore relations with the United States. In his first public comments since Trump’s win, Putin praised Trump’s courage and demeanor during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate him on his election,” Putin said at the Valdai discussion club in Sochi. “He behaved in a very correct way, courageously, like a real man.”
Putin also noted Trump’s comments about Ukraine and his desire to restore relations with Russia during the election campaign. “What was said about the desire to restore relations with Russia, to bring about the end of the Ukrainian crisis, in my opinion this deserves attention at least,” Putin said.
While Trump has promised to bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours if elected, he has offered few details on how he would achieve this.
Putin emphasized that Russia is ready to restore relations with the US, but that the ball is now in Washington’s court. When asked about a potential meeting with Trump, Putin said he is open to resuming contact and engaging in discussions if the Trump administration expresses interest.
Both Russia and Trump have repeatedly dismissed claims from Western media that Trump is a Russian agent of influence, calling these allegations “nonsense.” Russian officials have also pointed out that during his first term as president, Trump was tough on Russia.
