**MUMBAI:** The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, has strongly condemned remarks made by a political leader against a woman candidate, directing officials to take strict action against violators. The statement came during a review meeting with district poll officers, municipal commissioners, and police chiefs ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra elections scheduled for November 20.
The controversy arose after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant made a derogatory comment about BJP leader Shaina NC, who joined the Shinde Sena faction to contest the election. Sawant’s remark, which was in response to a reporter’s question about Shaina NC’s chances in the Mumbadevi constituency, was widely criticized as being offensive and disrespectful towards women.
Shaina NC, in her response, condemned Sawant’s comment, stating that she is a “daughter of Mumbai” and not some “goods”. She also criticized her opponent, Amin Patel, for smiling at Sawant’s remark, questioning whether he would have made such a comment about his own sister or wife.
The Election Commission had previously issued directives to political parties and candidates to refrain from any actions or utterances that could be considered repugnant to the honor and dignity of women. Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also slammed the opposition for their silence on the matter, using it as an opportunity to attack the Congress-led INDIA bloc, of which the Sena (UBT) is a member.
The Election Commission’s strong stance against such remarks is seen as a significant step towards ensuring a fair and respectful election campaign. The authorities are expected to take swift and decisive action against any violations of the code of conduct. The incident has also highlighted the need for political leaders to be mindful of their words and actions, particularly when it comes to women.
