**MANILA, PHILIPPINES –** Philippine military forces conducted a large-scale combat exercise on Wednesday, simulating the recapture of an island in the disputed South China Sea. The drill, the first of its kind in the contested waters, was closely observed by Chinese navy ships stationed at a distance, according to Philippine military chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.
The exercise, witnessed by a small group of journalists, was designed to demonstrate the Philippines’ commitment to defending its sovereignty in the face of growing Chinese assertiveness in the region. “We are warning our neighbours or whoever or any external forces that we are capable of defending our islands,” Brawner declared.
China has made extensive territorial claims in the South China Sea, overlapping with those of several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines. Beijing has consistently objected to military exercises in the region, viewing them as a provocative challenge to its claims. The disputed waters are a major point of friction in the US-China rivalry, with both countries seeking to assert their influence.
During the exercise, a Philippine navy frigate approached Loaita Island (known as Kota Island to the Philippines) while marines and navy sailors disembarked from speedboats and secured the beach. A Philippine Air Force aircraft later dropped supplies to the simulated recaptured forces. The presence of Chinese navy ships observing the exercise, according to Brawner, “added realism to the drill.”
The United States, a key ally of the Philippines and a counterweight to China’s growing regional power, has pledged to support the Philippines’ defense of its territory. The Biden administration has intensified its military presence in the Indo-Pacific, seeking to deter China from any aggressive actions, particularly towards Taiwan.
