**New Delhi, November 8, 2024:** A dispute has emerged between the AIIMS Delhi administration and the hospital’s resident doctors’ association (RDA) over the adjustment of leave taken during a recent nationwide protest. In August, doctors from several major hospitals, including AIIMS, participated in a 10-day agitation demanding justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The AIIMS administration has issued an office memorandum stating that the leaves taken by resident doctors during the protest will be adjusted against their allotted days off. This has been met with strong opposition from the RDA, who argue that such a move could negatively impact the doctors’ careers.
The RDA has emphasized that their legal team presented their case in the Supreme Court on Thursday, where the Chief Justice of India appealed to the AIIMS Director to consider the doctors’ concerns and adopt a more sympathetic approach. The RDA had previously written to the administration requesting a non-coercive approach regarding leave adjustment for doctors who participated in the protest.
The situation remains tense, with the RDA vowing to ensure that the administration’s memorandum is not implemented. The dispute underscores the ongoing tension between medical authorities and resident doctors concerning the balance between service commitments and the right to protest.
