Thu Nov 07 11:19:20 UTC 2024: ## Royal Families Condemn Rahul Gandhi’s “Pliant Maharajas” Remark

**New Delhi, India:** Royal families across India have denounced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement accusing their ancestors of being “pliant Maharajas” who colluded with the East India Company. They describe his claims as baseless, unacceptable, and a deliberate distortion of historical facts.

Gandhi, in an editorial published in a prominent newspaper, had asserted that the East India Company subjugated India not through business prowess alone but by exploiting compliant Maharajas and Nawabs. He further claimed that India lost its freedom to a monopolistic corporation, not another nation.

However, several royal descendants have vehemently refuted these accusations.

Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, from the Scindia family that once ruled Gwalior, called on Gandhi to stop insulting India’s heritage and instead learn about the true heroes of India’s struggle for independence. He highlighted the contributions of historical figures like Mahadji Scindia, Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit, Kittur Chennamma, and Rani Velu Nachiyar.

Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, granddaughter of the last Maharaja of Jaipur, emphasized that the dream of a united India was achieved due to the sacrifices of the erstwhile royal families. She labeled Gandhi’s accusations as “completely unacceptable.”

Chaitanya Raj Singh, a descendant of the Jaisalmer royal family, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and pointed to the unwavering support their families received from across India. He emphasized their commitment to upholding their dharma and integrating humanity with nature.

Vishvaraj Singh, a member of the Mewar royal family, questioned whether Gandhi’s statements were driven by ignorance or an intentional attempt to malign their legacy.

The royal families’ condemnations highlight the sensitivity surrounding India’s history and the legacy of its princely states. Gandhi’s remarks have sparked a heated debate about the role of the royal families in India’s freedom struggle and the East India Company’s influence.
