Mon Nov 04 05:52:32 UTC 2024: ## Violent Disruptions at Consular Camp in Canada Spark Tensions

**Brampton, Ontario, Canada -** Tensions between India and Canada escalated over the weekend following violent disruptions at a consular camp in Brampton, Ontario, and an attack on Hindu-Canadian devotees at a temple in the same city.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa blamed “anti-India elements” for the violence at the consular camp, co-organized with the Hindu Sabha Mandir. The camp, which aimed to provide life certificates to Indian diaspora members, was disrupted by individuals believed to be supporters of the Khalistan movement, a fringe separatist group seeking an independent Sikh homeland in Punjab.

The Indian High Commission expressed disappointment that despite requesting strong security measures from Canadian authorities, the disruptions were allowed to occur. They expressed concern for the safety of applicants, particularly Indian nationals, and highlighted the disruption of similar camps in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2-3.

Local police in Brampton, who deployed heavily outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir to maintain calm during protests, have not made any arrests and have declined to assign blame for the violence.

Federal lawmaker and member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, Chandra Arya, blamed the incident on “Khalistanis,” describing their actions as a “red line” being crossed. He pointed to the attack on the Hindu-Canadian devotees as evidence of the growing “brazen” Khalistani extremism in Canada.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show individuals carrying yellow Khalistan flags clashing with a rival group, including people holding Indian flags, and engaging in isolated fistfights.

The incidents come amidst deteriorating relations between India and Canada, following accusations from Ottawa that the Indian government orchestrated the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistan activist, in Vancouver. Canada has also accused India of a broader campaign targeting Sikh activists on Canadian soil, including intimidation, threats, and violence.

Earlier this month, both countries expelled each other’s ambassadors and other senior diplomats. The recent incidents are likely to further strain relations between the two countries.
