Tue Nov 05 20:58:16 UTC 2024: ## Tennis Legend Navratilova Renews Criticism of Olympic Boxer’s Gender, Citing Leaked Medical Report

Tennis icon Martina Navratilova has reignited controversy surrounding Olympic boxer Imane Khelif, reiterating her skepticism about the athlete’s gender identity. Navratilova, who was among those questioning the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to allow Khelif to compete in Paris, claims to have seen a leaked medical report identifying the gold medalist as biologically male.

The report, reportedly accessed by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia, was compiled by medical experts in June 2023 and states that Khelif possesses XY chromosomes, a marker typically associated with biological males. Further details in the report, which remain unverified by India Today, reportedly describe Khelif as having internal testicles, no uterus, and a micropenis – characteristics that could be linked to developmental conditions like 5-alpha reductase deficiency.

This controversy stems from a broader debate surrounding the eligibility of female athletes in sports. Khelif and fellow Olympian Li Yu-ting of Taiwan were both disqualified from the 2023 world championships in New Delhi due to alleged failures in gender eligibility tests. The International Boxing Association (IBA), which imposed the tests, was subsequently banned from the Olympics by the IOC due to concerns over governance and transparency.

The IOC, however, has defended Khelif and Li, stating their right to compete in Paris and condemning the criticism they have faced as “hate speech.”

Khelif, who became the first Algerian female boxer to win Olympic gold, has staunchly defended her right to compete, declaring, “I am fully qualified to take part in this competition. I’m a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I lived a woman, I competed as a woman, there’s no doubt about that.”

The public debate over Khelif’s case highlights the complexities of gender identity in sport, with questions raised about the fairness of competition and the impact of discriminatory language.
