Wed Nov 06 08:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Asheville Hibachi Restaurant Faces Uncertain Future After Devastating Flood

ASHEVILLE, NC – A beloved Asheville restaurant, Ichiban, faces an uncertain future after being severely damaged by Tropical Storm Helene. The hibachi restaurant, owned and operated by the Chen family for 25 years, was flooded when the Swannanoa River crested at over 26 feet in Biltmore Village, inundating the restaurant with water that reached the ceilings.

The Chen family, who have poured their heart and soul into Ichiban, are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding. The restaurant, a popular spot for families and locals, served 800 to 900 people each weekend. “We love this restaurant…That’s what we depend on the most to raise our kids,” said Kevin Chen, one of the six siblings who own the restaurant.

The cost of rebuilding is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The family, while grateful for the over $41,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign, say it’s not enough to cover the necessary repairs.

Adding to their worries is the uncertainty surrounding their landlord, Dewey Property Advisors. The company, which owns multiple properties in Biltmore Station, is still assessing the damage and considering the viability of rebuilding in the flood-prone area.

Eddie Dewey, founder of Dewey Property Advisors, expressed his desire to help businesses rebuild but acknowledged the challenges, including the potential for increased insurance premiums and the need for extensive flood mitigation measures. “A small business like Ichiban can’t wait 18 months to reopen,” said Dewey, emphasizing the need for a swift and effective recovery.

The Chen family, however, is facing a difficult decision. They cannot afford to rebuild Ichiban on their own, and they’re unsure if relocating is a feasible option due to limited available space.

Despite the uncertainties, the Chen family is grateful for the support they’ve received from the community. “We really appreciate everybody helping, from the bottom of our heart,” said Chen. “Everybody needs help… we all got hurt more or less.”

The future of Ichiban remains uncertain, but the Chen family is determined to find a way forward, emphasizing the resilience and determination of small business owners in the face of adversity.
