Tue Nov 05 01:26:36 UTC 2024: ## West Bengal Government Faces Criticism for Numerous Holidays in November
**Kolkata, November 4, 2024:** West Bengal is currently experiencing a surge in government holidays, with November boasting five days off, making it the second most holiday-filled month of 2024, after October’s thirteen. This follows the Trinamool Congress government’s decision in 2021 to introduce more holidays, including additional days off for various festivals.
While the extended breaks are welcomed by many state government employees and students, some are expressing concerns about the impact on productivity and the academic calendar. Critics argue that the numerous holidays lead to a lack of professionalism and hinder the state’s progress.
“Too many holidays disturb the academic session,” said Ishita Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Economics at the University of Calcutta. “While we understand the social importance of festivals, too many holidays mean a lack of professionalism. Already the state is pulling backwards; holidays are reinforcing that.”
An anonymous state government employee from Murshidabad echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for administrative delays and disruption to work rhythms.
However, others argue that the extended holidays serve as a form of compensation for government employees who receive comparatively lower salaries than their counterparts in the central government and other states.
Educational institutions like New Alipore College are adapting to the holiday surge by implementing online classes and events. “We have planned many online events and classes for our students in November,” said Principal Jaydeep Sarangi. “Many students will do internships at different places and complete their formalities.”
The debate over the appropriateness of numerous holidays in West Bengal continues, with opinions divided on the balance between celebrating cultural traditions and ensuring efficient public service delivery.
