**Thoothukudi, November 4, 2024:** Sanitary workers affiliated with the CITU union staged a protest in Thoothukudi on Monday, demanding the Thoothukudi Corporation pay them wages according to the Government Order.

The workers initially planned to hold an indefinite relay hunger strike, but were denied permission by authorities. Despite this, a group of workers gathered near the Chidambara Nagar bus stop, leading to an altercation with the police.

Following the confrontation, authorities agreed to allow a limited number of workers to participate in the relay hunger strike.

The CITU leadership, including district president Pechimuthu and secretary Rasal, stated that the Government Order mandates a daily wage of ₹754 for conservancy workers and ₹792 for drivers. They asserted that the strike will continue until their demands are met.

The CITU leaders also assured that the protest would not disrupt normal work duties and vehicle movement in the city. The relay hunger strike will continue with members of the association taking turns to participate.
