Tue Nov 05 11:10:17 UTC 2024: ## NLSIU Secures 7 Acres of Land, Offers 10 Supernumerary Quota Seats for Karnataka Students

**Bengaluru, November 5, 2024:** In exchange for acquiring seven acres of land from Bangalore University, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has agreed to reserve an additional 10 Supernumerary Quota seats for students from Karnataka. This deal marks a significant expansion for NLSIU and will enhance access to legal education for Karnataka residents.

The agreement, finalized between the Karnataka government and NLSIU, will come into effect from the next academic year. The seven acres of land, located on the Bangalore University’s Jnanabharati campus, will be leased to NLSIU for 30 years at a rate of ₹50,000 per acre per annum.

Initially, Bangalore University had imposed a condition requiring 50% of seats to be reserved for Karnataka students in exchange for the land. However, the government objected to this clause, leading Bangalore University to withdraw it and leave the reservation policy to the government’s discretion.

“NLSIU already reserves 25% of seats for Karnataka students,” explained M.C. Sudhakar, Minister of Higher Education. “But we wanted to ensure that providing land for campus expansion was not a free gift. We requested the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and other judges to consider providing additional seats for Karnataka students. They have agreed to offer 10 additional seats under the Supernumerary Quota, a special quota reserved for Karnataka.”

This agreement comes at a time when NLSIU has been actively increasing the number of seats allocated to Karnataka students. Since 2021, the university has offered 43 seats in 2021-22, 78 in 2022-23, and 115 seats in 2023-24 for admission to BA LLB (Hons), LLB (Hons), and LLM courses.
