**Mumbai, India** – Helena Luke, the first wife of renowned actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty, passed away in the United States on November 3rd, 2023. She was 68 years old. While the cause of death is currently unknown, Luke’s final Facebook post hinted at a sense of unease and discombobulation.
Luke, who met Chakraborty in the late 1970s, married him in 1979. However, the marriage lasted only four months before they divorced. Despite her brief marriage, Luke made a mark in Bollywood with her role as a British queen in the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Mard’.
Following her film career, Luke moved to the United States where she settled and worked in the airline industry.
In a past interview, Luke had revealed that Chakraborty’s infidelity contributed to their separation. She had described him as immature and had accused him of having a guilt complex, ultimately leading to the breakdown of their relationship.
Meanwhile, Chakraborty has been honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film award, becoming the 54th recipient of the award. He joins a list of distinguished film personalities, including Prithviraj Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, and Waheeda Rehman.
Chakraborty was recently hospitalized in Kolkata after experiencing chest pain and was diagnosed with an Ischemic Cerebrovascular Accident. He was last seen in the Bengali film ‘Kabuliwala’, released in December 2023.
While Luke’s short-lived marriage to Chakraborty and her brief film career were significant parts of her life, she will be remembered for her contributions to Indian cinema and her life in the United States.
