Mon Nov 04 10:30:46 UTC 2024: ## Bengali Takes Center Stage in New York’s Multilingual Election

**New York City, November 4, 2024:** New York, renowned for its diverse population speaking over 200 languages, is taking a step towards inclusive voting in the upcoming US Presidential election. While English remains the primary language on the ballot, voters will also have the option to choose from four other languages: Chinese, Spanish, Korean, and Bengali. This marks a significant development for the Bengali-speaking community in the city.

The inclusion of Bengali is not just a gesture of goodwill, but a legal requirement stemming from a lawsuit focusing on language access for minorities. This decision was reached after a settlement with the South Asian community, who argued that a language representing the diverse Indian population needed to be included.

The move has been met with enthusiasm from the Bengali community, with many expressing relief and appreciation for the increased accessibility. Subhshesh, a resident of Queens, expressed his satisfaction, stating that his father, who is comfortable in Bengali, would benefit greatly from the translated ballot papers.

The inclusion of Bengali ballots is expected to have a positive impact on voter turnout within the community. Dr Avinash Gupta, President of the Federation of Indian Association, believes that this will encourage more Indian residents to participate in the electoral process.

The first Bengali translated ballots were introduced in 2013, following a federal mandate for language assistance for South Asian minorities. This step towards inclusivity is a testament to the city’s commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard in the democratic process.
