**Florianópolis, Brazil (October 28, 2024):** The 2024 World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC) has officially commenced at the Canasvieiras Internacional Hotel, bringing together 527 of the world’s most promising young chess players. Representing 62 countries, including chess powerhouses like the United States, India, and China, these talented individuals will compete in three age categories: Under 14, 16, and 18, with separate divisions for both boys and girls.

The opening ceremony, held on Tuesday, kicked off six 11-round Swiss tournaments with classical time control, each running concurrently. The event, organized by FIDE in partnership with the Brazilian Chess Confederation (CBX), is led by Chief Arbiter IA Kaiser Luiz Mafra.

Host nation Brazil boasts the largest contingent with 97 players, showcasing the growing popularity of the sport in the country. International standards are upheld with metal detectors in place to prevent any use of unauthorized electronic devices.

A dedicated team of FIDE arbiters and technical staff ensures the smooth operation of the tournament.
