Sun Nov 03 16:47:25 UTC 2024: ## Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Set for First Session After Six Years

**Srinagar, November 3, 2024** – The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will convene its first session on November 4, marking a significant milestone after a six-year hiatus following the region’s transformation into a Union Territory. The session is expected to be a heated one, with the National Conference (NC) planning to table a resolution opposing the Centre’s 2019 decision to revoke Article 370, which granted special status to the former state.

The NC, currently holding 55 seats in the 90-member Assembly, has vowed to bring the resolution in its first session. The move is likely to be met with resistance from the BJP, the party currently in power at the Centre.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s address to the Assembly is also anticipated to be a key event. The content of the speech, traditionally drafted by the General Administration Department based on input from various ministries, will be closely watched for any potential clashes with the policies of the elected government.

The session will also see the election of a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker. Senior NC leader Abdul Rahim Rather has been nominated for the post of Speaker, while BJP MLA Dr. Narender Singh is vying for the position of Deputy Speaker.

In other developments, Sunil Sharma has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition, while Sat Sharma has been named as the new J&K BJP president.

The five-day session, concluding on November 8, will include an obituary tribute to former legislators and a debate on the Motion of Thanks on the L-G’s address.
