Mon Nov 04 06:57:43 UTC 2024: ## Election Commission Orders Transfer of Maharashtra DGP Amidst Allegations of Bias

**Mumbai, November 4, 2024:** The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the immediate transfer of Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rashmi Shukla, ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for November 20. The ECI has also requested the Maharashtra Chief Secretary to submit the names of three seniormost IPS officials for consideration as the next DGP.

This move comes after a complaint filed by Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, who accused Ms. Shukla of displaying a “clear bias” against opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP(SP). Patole alleged that the state has witnessed numerous incidents of political violence targeting opposition leaders in the past 20 days, raising concerns about fairness in the upcoming elections.

Ms. Shukla, the first woman DGP of Maharashtra, has previously been embroiled in controversy related to alleged phone tapping of Opposition leaders during her tenure as the Commissioner of the State Intelligence Department (SID). Although the FIRs lodged against her were subsequently quashed, the allegations of bias continue to shadow her leadership.

The ECI’s intervention highlights the importance of maintaining a neutral and impartial law enforcement environment during elections. The commission’s swift action demonstrates its commitment to ensuring a free and fair electoral process in Maharashtra. The upcoming assembly elections are crucial for the state, with all eyes on the outcome and the role of law enforcement in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
