**New Delhi, November 4, 2024:** CPI(M) MP John Brittas has responded to Union Minister Ravneet Singh’s repeated “Hindi-only” replies during Parliamentary interventions by speaking in Malayalam.
In a letter, Brittas stated that the deliberate use of Hindi as the sole language of communication by the Union Minister is discriminatory and contravenes the Official Languages Act of 1963. He pointed out that the Act mandates the use of English for all official purposes of the Union, including parliamentary proceedings, especially when communicating with states that have not adopted Hindi as their official language.
Brittas highlighted that this issue affects numerous MPs from Southern States, hindering their participation in parliamentary discussions. He expressed concern that the “Hindi-only” policy acts as a barrier to effective communication, creating an uneven playing field.
“This pattern of Hindi-only replies disregards the law and hampers MPs from non-Hindi-speaking regions in their parliamentary work,” said Brittas.
