Sat Nov 02 16:47:52 UTC 2024: ## Israeli Raid in Lebanon Sparks Tensions: Abduction of Naval Officer Fuels Outrage
**Beirut, Lebanon** – Tensions between Lebanon and Israel escalated significantly following a suspected Israeli naval raid in the northern Lebanese town of Batroun on Friday. An unidentified military force landed on the shore at dawn, seizing a Lebanese man identified as Imad Amhaz before fleeing the scene.
Amhaz, reportedly a senior member of Hezbollah’s naval force according to Israeli sources, was abducted just 100 meters from his home, sparking outrage among Lebanese officials and the public. Witnesses and CCTV footage captured the raid, showing a group of armed men leading Amhaz away with his shirt over his head.
The Lebanese government condemned the incident, labeling it a “Zionist aggression” and demanding an immediate investigation. Prime Minister Najib Mikati consulted with military and UNIFIL officials and called for an urgent complaint to be filed with the UN Security Council.
Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamieh questioned the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aimed to resolve the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, highlighting the incident as a violation of the resolution.
The raid comes amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon. Israeli forces have been launching air strikes across Lebanon, targeting areas including Nabatieh, the Bekaa Valley, and the ancient cities of Tyre and Baalbek. Hezbollah retaliated with rocket and drone attacks into Israel, injuring 19 people in central Israel.
While Lebanese officials believe the raid was carried out by Israeli forces, Israeli authorities have yet to officially comment. However, a source cited by Israeli journalist Barak Ravid claimed Amhaz’s abduction was a deliberate operation targeting a key Hezbollah figure.
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, denied any involvement in the raid and condemned the spread of disinformation.
The incident in Batroun has further heightened tensions in the region, raising fears of a wider conflict. International observers are closely monitoring the situation, urging both sides to exercise restraint and de-escalate the conflict.
