Sat Nov 02 16:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Rutherford Calls for Disciplined Batting as West Indies Seek Series Redemption
**Pallekele, Sri Lanka:** Despite a valiant effort from in-form batsman Sherfane Rutherford, the West Indies suffered their second consecutive five-wicket defeat in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, losing the second match on Wednesday.
Rutherford, who top-scored for the Windies with a brilliant 80, urged his teammates to adopt a more disciplined and committed approach at the crease, emphasizing the need for extended partnerships to challenge Sri Lanka’s strong spin attack.
“I’m in some good form, but as a team, I think we need to spend more time at the crease,” Rutherford stated. “We have a good bunch of guys, and we will come back stronger. We need to find ways to take singles and put away the bad balls.”
The 26-year-old left-hander has been a shining light for the Windies during the tour, recording half-centuries in both ODIs. His recent form has seen him average an impressive 56.50 in his five ODI appearances.
Despite the series loss, Rutherford remains optimistic and believes the team can end the tour on a high in the third and final ODI. “I have no doubt the guys will come back. They are very hungry and excited for the third game, so I know they will come and put their best foot forward,” he said.
Rutherford also highlighted the impressive performance of Gudakesh Motie, who joined him in a record-breaking 119-run ninth-wicket partnership. The pair’s stand was the highest ever for the ninth wicket in West Indies history, and the fourth highest of all time.
“I play a lot with Motie, and I know that he can bat, so I was just telling him to keep good intent, back yourself, and not just look to survive,” Rutherford explained.
The final ODI is scheduled for tomorrow, with the West Indies hoping to salvage some pride and end the tour on a positive note.
