**Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan -** Shahid Lund Baloch, a notorious Pakistani gangster wanted for 28 crimes including murder and abduction, is using social media to taunt authorities and cultivate a hero image among the public.
Baloch, who has a 10 million Pakistani rupee bounty on his head, is hiding in the “Katcha lands” along the Indus River, a region known for its dense vegetation and shifting waterways which provide ideal cover for criminal activities.
Despite a large police presence and even an Army incursion in 2016, the area remains a haven for bandits who exploit the region’s geographic features to evade capture.
Baloch utilizes platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to connect with his audience. In his videos, he flaunts his weaponry, romanticizes his lifestyle, and presents himself as a champion of the people.
He claims to have taken up arms after family members were killed in tribal clashes and that he is fighting for justice in a lawless land. His followers, many of whom reside in the areas he terrorizes, hail him as a “beloved brother bandit” and a “real hero.”
However, law enforcement officials emphasize that Baloch’s online persona is a facade, masking his heinous crimes. They cite numerous cases of abduction, extortion, and violence attributed to him.
While the police have launched numerous operations to capture Baloch, he continues to evade them. They are exploring various strategies, including limiting mobile phone network capabilities in the region to disrupt social media access, as well as promoting anti-honey trap awareness campaigns to protect citizens from being lured into criminal activities.
Baloch’s growing online influence poses a significant challenge to the police. However, despite his social media stardom, authorities believe that his true nature will eventually be revealed to his followers.
