**[City, State] -** Netflix is undergoing a significant restructuring of its senior leadership, with the departure of two key executives: Chief Communications Officer Rachel Whetstone and Global Public Policy VP Dean Garfield. The news was shared with employees via an internal memo on Tuesday.
The streaming giant is combining its communications and policy functions into a newly created role: Chief Global Affairs Officer. This move reflects Netflix’s effort to streamline its operations and adapt to the evolving media landscape.
Both Whetstone and Garfield are well-respected industry veterans. Whetstone, who joined Netflix in 2018, brought extensive experience from companies like Google, Uber, and Facebook. Garfield, who joined in 2019, boasts a strong background in policy, having served as CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council and held senior positions at the Motion Picture Association and the Recording Industry Association of America.
However, Garfield’s lack of communications experience and Whetstone’s decision to not pursue the combined role led to their departures. While Netflix’s restructuring efforts haven’t been as drastic as those seen in other media giants, they signify a significant shift as the company redefines its leadership structure.
“For nearly six years, Rachel and Dean have been not just leaders, but true partners,” said Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos in a statement, also acknowledging Co-CEO Greg Peters. “Their counsel, dedication, and passion have shaped our company and contributed to our success.”
Netflix is currently searching for an external candidate to fill the newly created Chief Global Affairs Officer role, which will encompass both communications and policy functions. The company is expected to announce the new appointee in the coming weeks.
