Sat Nov 02 07:08:59 UTC 2024: ## Congress and BJP Clash Over Election Promises, Accusations Fly
A heated political battle has erupted between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress, with both parties trading accusations over election promises and governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken aim at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, criticizing his party’s tendency to make unrealistic promises to voters.
Modi, in a series of tweets, urged Congress state units to make fiscally responsible campaign pledges, citing the poor governance and financial health of Congress-ruled states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. He accused the Congress of “betraying” the trust of voters by failing to fulfill its promises, citing delayed salaries for government employees in Himachal Pradesh and unfulfilled loan waivers for farmers in Telangana.
Kharge, in a scathing response, accused the BJP of “lies, deceit, fakery, loot, and publicity,” labeling their 100-day plan a “cheap PR stunt.” He also challenged the BJP to fulfill its own promises, questioning the fate of their “acche din” (good days ahead) and two crore jobs per year pledges.
The Congress echoed Kharge’s accusations, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel defending their party’s record of fulfilling its commitments.
The recent spat comes amidst a broader debate on the “revdi culture” – a term coined by Modi to criticize the practice of political parties offering pre-election incentives and promises. While the BJP has also used such tactics to secure victories, both parties have been accused of leveraging promises to win elections, only to fail to deliver on their commitments.
