**Mumbai:** A heated political controversy erupted in Maharashtra after Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant allegedly referred to BJP candidate Shaina NC as “imported maal,” sparking widespread criticism and legal action.
Sawant, a prominent figure in the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, made the controversial comment while criticizing Shaina NC’s decision to join the BJP. He reportedly stated that “imported maal” doesn’t thrive in the region, implying that she lacks local roots.
Shaina NC promptly filed a complaint with the Nagpada Police Station, alleging that Sawant’s remarks were disrespectful and objectified her. The police registered an FIR against Sawant under sections related to outraging women’s modesty.
The Election Commission and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission have taken notice of the incident and are investigating the matter.
In response to the controversy, Sawant has apologized, claiming that his statement was “interpreted differently” and he never intended to insult women.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, however, defended Sawant’s statement, arguing that it was not intended as an insult and that it’s common to point out the origins of outsiders contesting elections. He further pointed out that similar comments had been made about Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi in the past.
The controversy has further inflamed the political tensions in Maharashtra, particularly in the run-up to the upcoming state elections. The incident highlights the increasingly divisive rhetoric and personal attacks prevalent in Indian politics.
