Sat Nov 02 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Dyer County Choctaws Claim Region 7-4A Championship with Convincing Win over Haywood
**Newbern, TN** – The Dyer County Choctaws celebrated Senior Night in style, securing the Region 7-4A championship with a dominant 59-27 victory over the Haywood Tomcats.
The Choctaws overcame a shaky start, falling behind 14-0 early in the first quarter. However, they responded with a 45-7 run to take control of the game.
Head Coach David Whittle praised his team’s resilience, highlighting their ability to bounce back after the early deficit. “Defensively, I thought we played outstanding,” Whittle said. “We gave up 14 quick points and then went on a 45-7 run. That’s what I was more proud of – when we responded.”
The Choctaws’ offense was led by a powerful rushing attack, racking up 427 yards on the ground. Korey Taylor led the way with 234 yards and three touchdowns, while Ja’Bari Livingston added 171 yards and three scores of his own.
The Choctaws’ defense also played a crucial role in the victory. They forced turnovers and made timely stops, ultimately shutting down the Tomcats’ offensive momentum.
This victory marks the Choctaws’ first region championship since 2007, and they will now host the No. 4 seed out of Region 8-4A in the first round of the playoffs next week. With a 9-1 regular season record and a strong offensive and defensive unit, the Choctaws are poised for a deep playoff run.
“We’ve got to continue to build,” Whittle said. “Everybody is going to be 0-0. But we put ourselves in a good situation being able to stay at home for a little bit. It’s go time now. You can’t take anybody lightly. The plan is to go back. We’re going to really, really enjoy this one tomorrow. The kids are going to be off and through the week. 9-1 sounds good, doesn’t it.”
