Sat Nov 02 11:44:01 UTC 2024: ## Voyager 1 Loses Contact with Earth Again

**Pasadena, CA:** The Voyager 1 probe, humanity’s most distant spacecraft, has once again lost contact with Earth after 47 years of service. The probe, which has been sending back invaluable scientific data, is unable to transmit clear information back to Earth due to a malfunction in its Flight Data Subsystem.

The problem arose after the probe was instructed to activate its heater on October 16th. This required power, but the onboard Fault Prevention System, designed to prevent further damage, kicked in, interfering with communication. The Deep Space Network was unable to receive signals from Voyager 1 on October 18th, confirming the loss of contact.

The flight crew suspects the Fault Prevention System activated twice, causing the probe’s primary X-band radio transmitter to shut down, forcing it to switch to the secondary S-band transmitter. While the S-band transmitter uses less energy, its signal is weaker and has not been used since 1981.

This is not the first time Voyager 1 has lost contact due to malfunctions in its Fault Prevention System. A similar incident occurred in 2023, but communication was restored after eight months. However, despite the current difficulties, experts believe the mission is a resounding success, regardless of whether full control is regained.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 was initially tasked with studying Jupiter and Saturn. After completing these objectives, it continued its journey deeper into space, becoming the first man-made object to enter interstellar space. Its twin, Voyager 2, followed suit.

While the situation is concerning, scientists remain optimistic about the possibility of re-establishing communication with Voyager 1 and hope to continue receiving data from this remarkable spacecraft for years to come.
