Mon Oct 28 20:02:58 UTC 2024: ## IPL Mega Auction Looms: Teams to Decide Fate of Players by October 31st
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for its sixth mega auction, scheduled to take place in the Middle East next month. This auction is set to be a major reshuffle for teams, with franchises needing to submit their list of retained players by October 31st, 5 pm.
The mega auction serves as a mechanism to ensure player rotation and prevent teams from holding onto players for extended periods. This year’s auction is particularly significant due to the short gap between the 2022 and 2024 editions, a concern raised by team owners earlier this year.
Teams are allowed to retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players. This year, the retention rules allow teams to retain both Indian and foreign players, with no restriction on the number of overseas players retained.
One of the key features of the auction is the Right To Match (RTM) card, which gives teams the ability to match the highest bid for a player they previously released. This year, RTM comes with a new twist – if a team uses RTM for a player, another franchise that previously bid the highest for that player can then make a counter-bid, forcing the original team to match it to secure the player.
The IPL retention process will be televised on JioCinema and Star Sports Network, starting at 4:30 pm on October 31st. Fans can tune in to watch the unveiling of the retention lists and anticipate the upcoming mega auction that will shape the landscape of the IPL for the next season.
