Thu Oct 17 18:50:06 UTC 2024: ## Israel Claims to Have Killed Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza Operation
**Gaza City, October 17, 2023:** Israeli authorities have announced the death of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, in a military operation in Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed the news, claiming that Sinwar was among three Hamas militants killed in a targeted strike by Israeli forces.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) initially reported the killing of three militants, but later confirmed that Sinwar was among them. The IDF identified Sinwar through DNA testing conducted on one of the bodies recovered from the operation.
Sinwar had been on Israel’s most wanted list since the start of the recent conflict and his death is seen as a major blow to Hamas. The organization has not yet confirmed his death.
Katz described Sinwar’s killing as a “military and moral achievement” for the Israeli army and suggested it could lead to the release of hostages.
Sinwar, who was born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in Gaza in 1962, was a prominent figure in Hamas, eventually becoming its leader. He had been imprisoned by Israel from the late 1980s until 2011, during which time he received treatment for brain cancer, providing Israeli authorities with DNA samples.
Sinwar was elected Hamas leader in July after his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was reportedly killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Tehran.
The news of Sinwar’s death comes amidst a brutal conflict between Israel and Hamas, triggered by a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, including many civilians, and over 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
