Fri Oct 18 00:23:32 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore City to Install Flood Gauges at Underpasses to Prevent Vehicle Stranding
**Coimbatore, October 17, 2024:** In a bid to prevent vehicles from getting stuck in flooded underpasses, Coimbatore City authorities have installed a pilot flood gauge at the ARC underpass in Sivananda Colony. This initiative follows recent incidents where both a government and a private bus were stranded in deep water at the same underpass, requiring police and fire and rescue services to intervene.
The new flood gauge post features three coloured zones, indicating different levels of water depth and corresponding safety risks. A green zone signifies safe passage for vehicles, an orange zone allows passage with caution, while a red zone warns vehicles not to attempt to pass.
This pilot project is being implemented by the Highways Department and the civic body, who plan to install these flood gauges across all underpasses in Coimbatore in phases. The initiative is expected to provide timely warnings to drivers and prevent future vehicle stranding during heavy rainfall.
