**Bahraich, October 17:** In a statement issued today, Bahraich police refuted claims surrounding the death of Ram Gopal Mishra, who died during an immersion procession in Mahsi Maharajganj on Sunday, October 13. The police confirmed that Mishra’s death was caused by a gunshot wound and dismissed rumours that he was tortured, had his nails removed, or was electrocuted.
The police also stated that only one person died in the incident and appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumours and misinformation to maintain communal harmony.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and violence in the region, with incidents of arson and rioting reported across the city and surrounding villages. The incident also led to a suspension of immersion processions in the district, with demands for the arrest of the culprits.
Following a meeting with the District Magistrate, Monica Rani, and the Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, the immersion processions were resumed.
The police have filed a murder case against 10 individuals, including Abdul Hamid, Rinku alias Sarfaraz, Fahim, Raja alias Sahil Khan, Rehua Mansoor’s Nanka, and Maroof Ali, residents of Maharajganj.
On Wednesday, the police arrested Raja alias Sahil Khan alias Danish, who was later sent to jail. The police are actively pursuing the other accused, with search parties deployed to the Nepal border.
The incident has raised concerns over security and law enforcement in the district, with the police vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
