Wed Oct 16 17:51:25 UTC 2024: ## Heavy Rains Batter South India: Chennai on Red Alert, Flash Flood Risk in Several Areas
**Chennai, October 16, 2024:** Heavy rains continue to lash Chennai and surrounding districts, prompting the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) to maintain a red alert till Thursday morning. The first spell of the northeast monsoon has caused widespread flooding, particularly in the city’s fringes, with Cholavaram receiving an astounding 30 cm of rainfall.
While floodwaters have receded in areas under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) according to Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, concerns remain about the potential for flash flooding. The IMD has predicted a moderate flash flood risk in several districts of Tamil Nadu till Thursday morning.
**Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Also Impacted**
The heavy rains are not confined to Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are also experiencing intense rainfall, with authorities on high alert for potential flash floods. The Andhra Pradesh government has deployed 5,000 surveillance cameras in the worst-affected districts for 24/7 monitoring.
In Karnataka, Bengaluru has seen widespread flooding, forcing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to deploy tractors to assist residents.
**Disruptions and Relief Efforts**
Heavy rains have disrupted transportation, with the South Western Railway canceling several trains due to waterlogging. Schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry have been declared closed as a precautionary measure.
Relief efforts are underway across the affected regions. The Tamil Nadu government has announced free food at Amma Canteens for residents of Chennai. The Andhra Pradesh government has set up relief centers in Ongole, prioritizing the safety of pregnant women.
**Rain Delays India-New Zealand Test**
The first Test match between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru has been delayed due to incessant rain. The toss, scheduled for 9 am, was postponed, and the pitch remains under covers.
**Outlook**
The IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall in Bengaluru for the next three days. Chennai and its neighboring districts are likely to experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall until Thursday morning.
Authorities in all three states are urging residents to take necessary precautions and follow official advisories to ensure safety.
