Wed Oct 16 17:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Drugstore Giants Face Crisis: Walgreens to Close 1,200 Stores, CVS Lays Off Thousands

**CHICAGO, IL** – In a stunning move, Walgreens announced Tuesday it will shutter 1,200 stores over the next three years, representing roughly a quarter of its total locations. This follows a similar cost-cutting spree by rival CVS, which recently laid off 2,900 corporate employees.

Both drugstore giants are grappling with a perfect storm of challenges, including overexpansion, changing shopper habits, and a diminishing role in healthcare.

“The simplest part of the problem is scale,” explained retail analyst Neil Saunders. “CVS and Walgreens grew too big, with too many stores that aren’t performing well.”

The rise of online retailers like Amazon, as well as the aggressive price competition from big box stores like Walmart and Costco, have eroded sales. Shoppers are also increasingly dissatisfied with understaffed stores and rampant theft, leading to locked-up merchandise and an overall negative experience.

Another significant challenge has been the changing power dynamic with health insurers. Pharmacies once held the upper hand, relying on customer loyalty to their preferred pharmacy. However, that loyalty has been eroded as insurers have exerted more control over prescription drug coverage and costs.

Walgreens, in particular, faced a public fight with Express Scripts over pricing a decade ago, demonstrating the limitations of pharmacy power. The rise of retail giants with their own pharmacies, like Walmart and Costco, has further intensified the competition.

Both CVS and Walgreens have attempted to reinvent themselves as healthcare hubs, but these ventures have proven costly and time-consuming. Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth has announced a return to the company’s “legacy strength” as a pharmacy-focused business. CVS, meanwhile, is reportedly considering a breakup of its mergers with Aetna and Caremark.

While the situation is dire, both companies are hoping that new pricing models for filling prescriptions can revive their fortunes. However, analysts warn that the turnaround will be a long and difficult process.
