**Geneva:** India’s active participation in the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, demonstrates the country’s strong parliamentary diplomacy and its commitment to global collaboration, stated Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Leading the Indian parliamentary delegation, Birla emphasized India’s role in addressing global challenges through dialogue and cooperation.

Birla praised the skills, talent, and dedication of Indian diaspora, calling them brand ambassadors who promote familial ties and harmony wherever they reside. He attributed India’s leading role in tackling global issues to strong leadership and the strength of its citizens, both within the country and abroad.

The delegation, which included Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, several parliamentarians, and senior officials from both houses, is participating in the Assembly’s executive committee meetings, standing committee sessions, and various other events. The IPU, with 180 member parliaments and 15 associate members, provides a platform for parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation on various global issues.

During his meetings with parliamentarians from different countries, Birla discussed India’s efforts to improve its parliamentary system, incorporating technology for greater efficiency, and enhancing debate time in Parliament. He also highlighted India’s progress in digital public infrastructure, leading to reduced corruption and fostering innovation in diverse sectors.

The Lok Sabha Speaker also met with the Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles, Roger Mancienne, and discussed the strong ties between the two countries based on shared values of democracy and inclusivity. He also met with the Speaker of the Consultative Assembly of the State Council of Oman, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, and IPU President, Ms. Duarte. Birla proposed establishing an international resource center for IPU members, leveraging the expertise of the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracy (PRIDE), which has trained parliamentarians from over 115 countries.

Birla highlighted India’s long-standing friendly relations with Switzerland, based on shared values of non-alignment and neutrality. He emphasized the growing cooperation between the two countries in trade, investment, technology, education, and environmental protection.

The 149th IPU Assembly, taking place from October 13th to 17th, provides a significant platform for India to showcase its commitment to international cooperation and its role in shaping a better future for the world.
