Wed Oct 16 00:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Dana Brewing in Bay of Bengal, Threatening Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

**Chennai, India, October 15:** As the much-anticipated northeast monsoon approaches South India, a potential cyclone is brewing in the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry on October 16, due to a developing low-pressure area that could intensify into a cyclonic storm.

The system, currently located over the central-southern Bay of Bengal, is expected to move west-northwestward and approach the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by Thursday. While most models predict the system will intensify to a depression, the IMD’s Global Forecast System (GFS) suggests it could escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by Wednesday, potentially making landfall near Chennai as a severe category storm on Thursday, October 17.

If it intensifies, the cyclone will be named “Dana,” a name proposed by Qatar, in line with the World Meteorological Organization guidelines.

The developing system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, with extremely heavy downpours predicted for October 16.

The IMD has also issued warnings of squally weather along the affected coastal areas, with wind speeds expected to reach 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h. Fishermen have been advised to remain ashore as moderate to rough sea conditions are expected in the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD is closely monitoring the system and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
