Wed Oct 16 12:23:09 UTC 2024: ## Fuel Tanker Explosion Kills 94 in Jigawa State, Nigeria

**Jigawa, Nigeria** – A fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria, has claimed the lives of 94 people, with another 50 injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday night around 11:30 pm when the tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and overturned near Majiya, Taura Local Government Area.

According to Jigawa State Police Spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the fuel spilling onto the road and into a nearby gutter. Despite police efforts to prevent people from approaching the spilled fuel, residents rushed to collect it, overwhelming security personnel. As people were scooping up the fuel, the tanker caught fire, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

The victims have been transported to Ringim and Hadeja general hospitals for treatment. The tanker driver, who escaped unharmed, is in police custody while authorities conduct an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Graphic images and videos circulating online depict the aftermath of the explosion, showing bodies burnt beyond recognition scattered across the site. The incident comes amidst widespread public outcry over the recent hike in petrol prices in Nigeria, which many consider unaffordable. This marks the third price increase in 2024, with the price of fuel rising from approximately 187 Naira to 1,100 Naira in just one year.

Fuel tanker explosions and accidents are unfortunately common in Nigeria, often attributed to poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance. In September, a similar incident in Niger State led to the deaths of 59 people after a fuel tanker collided with a lorry carrying passengers and cattle.

The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the incident and stated that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
