Tue Oct 15 02:16:15 UTC 2024: ## US Deploys THAAD Missile Defense System to Israel Amid Tensions with Iran

**TEL AVIV, ISRAEL –** In a move to bolster Israel’s defenses against potential missile attacks, the United States is deploying a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense battery to the country. The decision comes following recent escalations in tensions with Iran, which has threatened retaliation for any Israeli attacks.

The THAAD system is renowned for its advanced capabilities, boasting a near-perfect success rate in tests and capable of intercepting ballistic missiles both inside and outside the atmosphere at ranges up to 200 kilometers. The system utilizes kinetic interceptors, meaning it physically collides with and destroys incoming targets.

The Pentagon confirmed the deployment, stating that approximately 100 US Army troops will be stationed in Israel to operate the battery. The decision underscores the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting Israel’s security, especially given Iran’s recent missile attacks.

The THAAD system is a vital addition to Israel’s existing arsenal of missile defense systems, which include the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 2 and 3 systems. These systems work in tandem to intercept various types of incoming projectiles, ranging from short-range rockets to long-range ballistic missiles.

While THAAD’s deployment is intended as a deterrent against potential Iranian attacks, its presence could also raise concerns from China, which previously voiced strong opposition to the deployment of a THAAD battery to South Korea in 2017. Experts believe China is apprehensive about the powerful radar system’s potential to monitor activities deep within its territory.

The Pentagon has not disclosed a timeline for the THAAD system’s activation in Israel, but its presence is expected to significantly enhance the country’s ability to defend itself against potential threats from Iran and other adversaries.
