Tue Oct 15 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Cricket’s Woes Run Deeper Than Player Performance: Nasser Hussain

Pakistan’s ongoing struggles in cricket extend far beyond the performances of individual players, according to former England captain Nasser Hussain. Hussain believes the team’s constant upheaval, characterized by frequent changes in coaching staff, captains, selectors, and even board leadership, has created an environment of instability that is detrimental to their long-term success.

“The issue is not Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, or Naseem Shah,” Hussain stated, pointing to the team’s recent decision to bench these key players following a poor showing in the first Test against England. “The issue is behind the scenes in the way Pakistan cricket runs.”

Hussain highlights the staggering number of selectors Pakistan has used in recent years, a figure that varies depending on the source, but sits somewhere between 26 and 27. In contrast, England has used just two or three selectors during the same period. “If you keep changing selectors, coaches, captains – constantly shuffling leadership – it’s impossible to plan ahead,” Hussain emphasizes. “No successful business or sports team works that way.”

This constant flux, according to Hussain, fosters short-term thinking, leading to unpreparedness and hasty, often ineffective, solutions. “By the time you lose the first Test, you’re already scrambling for solutions,” he says.

While acknowledging Pakistan’s financial challenges in the wake of the “Big Three” dominance in world cricket, Hussain believes the team’s self-inflicted wounds exacerbate their difficulties. “They shoot themselves in the foot,” he remarked.

These sentiments have found resonance with Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram, who tweeted, “I think finally boys are onto something here.”

As Pakistan prepares for the second Test against England, it remains to be seen whether they can overcome their internal turmoil and find the consistency they need to compete at the highest level.
