Tue Oct 15 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Rest Star Trio for Upcoming England Tests, Despite Recent Struggles
In a surprising move, Pakistan has dropped star players Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah for their upcoming two Test matches against England. The decision has raised eyebrows given the team’s recent struggles, including a humiliating innings defeat to England in the first Test.
While Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood explained the decision as a precautionary measure to ensure the players remain fit for a busy international schedule, many have criticized the move, particularly considering the team’s dismal performance.
However, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, Shaheen’s father-in-law, expressed support for the selectors’ decision. “This move not only helps protect and extend the careers of these champion players but also gives a great opportunity to test and groom emerging talent, building strong bench strength for the future,” Afridi stated on X.
Mahmood specifically highlighted the heavy schedule facing Pakistan, with tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa on the horizon. “Babar is our No.1 player. There is no question about that. His technique and ability are undeniable. But considering the packed schedule, this was the best time to give him a rest,” said Mahmood.
He further elaborated on the decision regarding the fast bowlers, stating, “We wanted to see how to get 20 wickets, and we now have more options with spin. There were also a few niggles with Naseem and Shaheen, who has played a lot of cricket recently. So we decided to rest him.”
This move comes after a string of disappointing results for Pakistan, including an innings defeat to England in the first Test, where they became the first team in history to suffer such a defeat after scoring over 500 runs in their first innings. Previously, they were whitewashed by Bangladesh in a Test series, marking the first time Bangladesh has achieved a Test victory in Pakistan.
The decision to rest key players amidst such challenging circumstances has sparked debate within the cricketing community. Whether it will prove to be a strategic move to rejuvenate players and foster new talent, or a risky gamble that could further worsen Pakistan’s performance remains to be seen.
